Term 2, Week 7, 2023 8 June 2023

A short walk from Campus, owner Stephen spoken about the heritage of one of Victoria’s most iconic properties, and we were able to see the indigenous canoe tree, the bluestone bricks marks with convict arrows, the homecraft Hostel as well as many other features of historic Victoria. All students received a commemorative booklet from the Invergowrie owners and an opportunity to reflect on their visit by entering a "Learning from the Past" competition. 

This week was Exam week for all Year 9s too. We've been pleased with the conscientiousness of the Tay Creggan students as they have prepared for their first formal Maths and English exams. Exams and reflecting on study offer several benefits for students. Firstly, exams serve as a comprehensive evaluation tool, allowing students to showcase their understanding of the subject matter and identify areas where they may need improvement. The process of preparing for exams encourages students to engage in active learning, review their notes, and consolidate their knowledge. Additionally, exams help foster a sense of discipline and time management, as students learn to prioritise their studies and allocate sufficient time for revision. Reflecting on study after exams provides an opportunity for self-assessment, allowing students to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, set goals for future improvement, and develop effective study strategies. 

With the long weekend upon us, Year 9 students will have the time to ensure that all work is up-to-date, and to prepare for an action-packed end to the term.

Thank you to our Strathy mums for supporting the lucky ticket draw which raised $1,800 for the Centenary scholarship. We were grateful to receive donated prizes from parents Lise Allen who kindly donated 3 hours of personal styling, Jen Broadhurst for the beautiful hamper from Coconut Home & Co, Yvette Price for the gorgeous Australian botanical inspired bags from alexisandcharli and Jen Aitchison for the chocolate hampers from KoKo Black. On Saturday evening, 145 Junior School students enjoyed a fun evening at the Junior School disco in Featherstone Hall. They had a professional DJ, photo booth, pizza and drinks while they danced the night away. An event not to be missed!

Karen covered a quick tour of brain development and what happens to brains during big feelings. Towards the end of the session Karen provided practical strategies that parents could use to assist their child to manage big feelings such as the importance of touch, rhythm, and play and provided examples of breathing exercises. 

Some key messages from the evening included: 

• Big behaviour comes from big feelings.
• Behaviours observed are not about manipulation but instead are physiologically based and originate from a brain that doesn’t feel safe.
• That parents can validate their child’s feelings are big and tough to manage but that as a parent we can handle these feelings.
• That parents need to preserve the connection with their child.
• That parenting works well when it is about love and leadership.
• That while these are our goals as parents we are not always perfect and are on this journey together with our children.

Some simple strategies will be provided to help ensure teens are able to interact with friends on a Saturday night and, at the same time, reduce the risk of underage drinking and the potential dangers associated with such behaviour. It aims to empower parents with a positive message and assist them in having open and honest family discussions in this complex area.

About the Guest Speaker:

Paul Dillon has been working in the area of drug education for more than 25 years. Through his own business, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) he has been contracted by many agencies and organisations across the country to give regular updates on current drug trends within the community. He continues to work with many school communities across the country to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug education.

He has worked extensively with a range of sporting organisations including the Australian Cricketers Association, the Rugby Union Players Association and the Football Federation of Australia to provide training workshops to elite athletes on a range of alcohol and other drug issues. In 2009 his best-selling book for parents was published titled ‘Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs‘ and has since been released internationally, being translated into a number of languages. With a broad knowledge of a range of content areas, Paul regularly provides media comment and is regarded as a key social commentator in Australia, appearing on a wide range of television programs including Sunrise, TODAY and The Project discussing topical issues.  Paul also had a regular spot on a national radio program on Triple J for seven years where he dealt with current youth drug issues. Paul also has a blog where he discusses topical issues of the day, as well as addressing some of the questions and queries he is regularly asked by those attending his presentations.
